The London Look at Christmas

The world class Christmas lights down Oxford street, carol singers in Covent Garden, little gloved fingers and noses pressed up against the glass gawking at the window display in Hamleys and Harrods, Buckingham palace festively illuminated and surrounded by larger than life Christmas trees. Whatever your favourite corner of the Capital is at Christmas, there's no denying that Christmas loves London!

For a bit of fun; why not create a Capital themed Christmas home this year? And pay homage to your British heritage. A red, white and blue colour scheme or a more royalist looking red, white and gold will add a vibrant colour backdrop to any room or tree. Then simply pepper with your favourite London icons; from the infamous London transport such as the Black cabs and red London Buses, to the red telephone boxes and post boxes in the streets, to the unmistakable tourist favourites such as the Queen's guards and Big Ben.

Here at The Contemporary home we’ve come up with three different design ideas for incorporating ‘The London Look’ into your home:

The Swinging Sixties

Take a step back in time to the undeniable heyday of England's Capital City, by going for a fun psychedelic scheme in your living room or kitchen.

To create a very Carnaby Christmas think peace and love, bright pop art inspired colours, and as many different patterns as possible. Fill your tree with an array of different coloured baubles and then surround them with hippy vibe heart decorations such as our London scene heart decorations or button heart decorations. Our set of four felt London Icon decorations would also look pretty in keeping with the Carnaby street style.

If you really want to go for the full Flower power look then why not replace tinsel with lengths of daisy chains made from silk flowers? You could also get the kids to help you make some psychedelic cut out flowers, brightly decorated with an unashamed array of colourful glitter and then stick to your wall or windows.

For a fun stained glass window ala Swinging sixties, cut out love hearts and snowflakes from a pack of multi coloured Cellophane and then make an eye catching arrangement bursting straight from the cover of the Sergeant Pepper’s album sleeve across your patio doors.

Or for a more grown up take on retro Carnaby Christmas, cut out snowflakes or circles of varying sizes from bits of scrap vintage 1960’s style materials, back with a circle of clear projector film and then hang from your Christmas tree. Groovy!

The London Icons

These infamous British icons are instantly recognisable the world over: The red London bus, telephone box and pillar box, the Beefeaters from The Tower of London, the unmistakable graphic design of The tube sign, and even the Queen's Corgis. All of these much loved symbols of London life can be found in The Contemporary home’s whimsical collection of London Christmas decorations.

Not only does this convivial collection of Christmas decorations make for a quirky and colourful way to decorate your Christmas tree, but they also make fantastic gift ideas (especially for our London loving cousins over the pond).

Maybe you have a Royalist in the family, who loves nothing more than settling down to the Queen's speech with a glass of sherry after their Christmas lunch? Well how’s about using one of these delightful Corgi dog decorations as their napkin ring at the dinner table, which will also make a charming keepsake for their Royal collection. The other guests not so Royally inclined? Then use our London icon stamp decorations in their place.

And for something that little bit special our glass London baubles proudly stand out from the crowd wherever they’re hung from.

Brit pop to make your Christmas rock!

Were you a kid of the 90’s? Maybe a bit of a Mod at heart? Or does the music from our home shores resonate with you as being the best in the world? Create a Christmas mood, with attitude! And deck your halls with Union Jack inspired red, white and blue and British music paraphernalia to get your Christmas home rocking this yuletide.

Union Jack Glass bauble

This look is all about flying the colours of the flag, so get your red, white and blue tinsel hanging from your tree and then dot a dozen Union Jack baubles about its branches. Next it's time to get creative! Why not make music inspired bunting from the old pages of an NME magazine, or from music scores? Or create a collage of all your favourite Christmas songs or albums if you're lucky enough to have the CD or vinyl covers.

For a really eye-catching piece for any room try and find an old guitar from a second hand shop, or dust one off thats been sitting in the attic. Then spray with red white and blue glitter paint, using masking tape to achieve the iconic Union Jack lines. Then mount on  a wall or simply stand nonchalantly against a wall in true rock and roll style, with some tinsel and baubles adorning its strings and tuning keys if you want to give it that extra festive makeover.
